Agricultural Barn, Asbestos Roof Removal

Project Details

Project: Agricultural Barn, Asbestos Roof Removal

Location: emmaus, Bedfordshire

Date: June 2021, 2 day project

Client: Private

Price: £3,000

Countryside demolition were requested to remove an asbestos roof from a barn in Emmaus Bedfordshire. The asbestos was cement fiber. The scaffolding was pre erected by the client who allowed us to use the scaffolding. Removal of an asbestos sheet roof is fairly simple but you must be very careful not to break the asbestos sheets. In this case the sheets were held in place by screws which went from the top side of the sheet into wood battens on the roof. Normally you are able to use bolt croppers on the inside of the roof and limit any disturbance to the asbestos. Unfortunately in this case the sheets had a shallow a profile so we were unable to get the croppers behind and to the metal bolts.

Not good news unfortunately!

Instead, we had no choice but to cut the bolt using a hand held grinder. When cutting the bolts and using a grinder it is paramount to wear the appropriate equipment and avoid cutting the material at all costs,. We also wetted the surface to help prevent dust if there was an accidental slip that cut into the material rather than the bolt.

AVOID CUTTING AND BREAKING ASBESTOS AT ALL COSTS.

As the potential for smaller fibers was great (we could potential disturb the material!), we used full asbestos grade gear. This includes full overalls, masks and goggles. Furthermore we wetted the area to keep dust to a minimum. Even though we did not cut the asbestos it’s important to think about what if?

What if whilst cutting a bolt the grinder slipped and cut the sheet?

Using a proactive approach to health and safety by wetting the area and wearing the appropriate graded gear kept risk to a minimum, the job gets done safely and everyone goes home happy.
